Hello. I am about to leave cingular for sprint. at the local dealer, they gave me the option of getting either the m500 or the a900m for free. i am a student and don't have a lot of money to spend on a phone, so I really need to choose from one of these. i think i prefer the a900, but from the reviews i've read, i'm weary of the battery life. any advice will be helpful. i don't care for the multimedia options. i'm just looking for a good phone - good reception, call clarity, and a decent battery life. which phone do you think is a better choice? also, are the reps instructed to push certain phones b/c the rep i spoke to was only recommending i pick up the m500 and it seemed scripted. thanks in advance!

Well to be honest, if you want multimedia then A900m, if this phone is free then hell you got a good deal there!, but the downside is the battery, but the battery life is way better now then when it first came out. M500 and A900 i would say is a tie, so my suggestion A900. How much are you willing to spend if you did want to buy a phone???

30 bucks at most. i know that's not a lot, so that's why i figured i might as well go with the free one🙂

Do yourself a favor and please bypass going into the local Sprint dealer(indirect retail sales channel) and activate your wireless service at a corporate retail store/kiosk. Yes, I'm biased being that I work for Sprint Nextel Inc. directly in one of their retail stores. I've seen too many issues with various Sprint dealers(indirect retail channel) ranging from selling customers preowned handsets without disclosing that fact to cramming commissionable features on the customer's account without their knowledge. Not all Sprint dealers are dishonest, but why risk not getting the expertise you'll get in one of the corporate retail stores. Either of these 2 handsets you've inquired about would cost you only 29.99 plus applicable sales tax after a ...

maybe i wasnt clear. the store i went into was a corporate sprint store. it was the sprint store offering both phones for free. i just need to know which is better to choose, especially considering the comments that the battery life on the a900m sucks. the rep was pushing for the m500, so i was wondering if employees are asked to push certain phones to clear out the inventory.

If he was trying to push phones to get them out of inventory, I would think he would have pushed the a900 considering it's life will be ending soon.

I'd go with the Samsung M500. Not only is it a bit more compact in size, it also has a two features the Samsung A900M doesn't. The first is the A2DP Bluetooth profile which is essence will allow you to listen to MP3s via Bluetooth provided you have a stereo Bluetooth headset and the second is the MicroSD slot which allows you to have additional storage for multimedia(up to 2 GB) where as the Samsung A900M only has about 45 MB of internal storage. I'm curious to know how the corporate Sprint retail store you visited selling either of the 2 handsets for free. The promotion in the market I work in is a waived activation fee and a one month service credit after the first full billing cycle(promotion ends at the end of March).

Not really. We even have a Thank Our Troops promotion for US Military until the end of June where they get up to a $50.00 service credit and activation fee waived.

Come on ray, you know how.
I personally wouldnt give them for free in the store, they would at least pay the $50 and then get it back through the mail-in.

LOL! I almost forgot the joy of managerial discretionary credits especially towards the EOM. Seems like every sales industry has a way to pull the proverbial rabbit from the hat when EOM is coming down to the wire.

First, I think it's a cheap shot for Ray to knock all third party retailers. In my store we do the exact same deals customers can get through any corporate store. While I understand that there are some dealers that may try to take advantage of uninformed consumers, you really shouldn't generalize. We are all here to help our customers get the best deal that suits their individual needs. Sounds like you're one of those "high and mighty" corporate reps that my customers complain about when they come do their activation with me.

Second, the choice between the phones is pretty clear in this case. The m500 wins this one hands down in my opinion. The major factor for me would be the removable media available on the m500 that the a900 does not o...

I didn't take a cheap shot wantacracker at the Sprint dealers. As I said in my thread wantabiscuit, not all Sprint dealers are dishonest. Why should a potential or even an existing customer risk getting subjected to pontentially subpar sales and service by going to a Sprint dealer when they can go into a corporate retail store/kiosk where we pretty much keep on top of all our products and services through constant trainings. If it was possible, wouldn't you want to buy your favorite vehicle right off the factory line(a retail store/kiosk) than through an independent dealership(Sprint dealer). If a customer purchases a wireless product from a corporate retail location, that customer can exchange it or get a full refund of the purchase price ...

Blah, blah, blah... My associates and I have access to all of the training that Sprint offers and we take advantage of that. Your argument of subpar service is complete hogwash. I can service any need that my existing or possible future customers may have. And your comparison of phone service to car manufacturers is weak. Can you go right to Motorola's assembly line and pick up a spanking fresh Q? Nope.

We have the same Sprint 30-Day return policy. However, you have one advantage in that my customers cannot return a phone to a corporate store. Why would they need to? If my customers have a problem within 30 days they come back to me for assistance. After that, they can have it serviced at my store or at any Sprint corporate store if they...

If you have a Colorado customer comes into your store and activates a phone for a relative in Arizona and one in Nebraska and gives it to them that night while eating dinner together before each of them depart for their respective states the next morning, can those relatives take their phones which had been purchased from your store exchange them within 30 days in their state? Or wireless accessories for that matter. I didn't think so either on either case. That is definitely a benefit of purchasing wireless products and services directly from Sprint than going through a third party store. As I stated earlier, any Sprint corporate retail store/kiosk can exchange/refund wireless handsets purchased from any other one. There aren't any benefits...

at my 3rd party store, we are not authorized to take back phones purchased at corporate or Affiliate owned stores, either. We instruct them to return it to the IPCS service center down the street or through Sprint.com/telesales centers if it is a problem we cannot help them with.

to answer the original question, though I thinhk the M500 is a better phone too because of battery life, and memory card mostly, but I also like the smaller size of the 500.

I'd skip both of these two handsets. The Samsung A900M is a discontinued model and the Samsung M510 is replacing the M500 in two colors, blue/black and pink/black. The M510 will support podcasts and has a rounded look to it instead of the oblong square look of the M500.

and the M510 looks lie it is going come in at $100 to $130 to start where the 500 is at $30 here right now. I'm not sold on the M510's look anyway as that much of a difference maker. But for $100 I'm getting the Upstage or maybe the Sanyo 8400 and pocket he extra $40.

A900m is plagues with problems, you can't tether in roaming, while with the m500 you can, you can't even use vision services while in roaming with the A900m. M500 may lack in screen size, but by far a much better phone, and ya gotta love tha capability of 2GB SD card size for 96MG Shared internal memory
