Cingular has GSM 1900 all over the place. Almost all of their GSM coverage in California is 1900 just to mention one of the many areas.

đ¤Ŗ I know they have it but I was told they are not using it in New England or in the South as they change over to GSM from TDMA. I knew they use the 1900 in San Diego as my son is a Marine there. We met in Hong Kong in August and Cingular told me a Nokia 6100 would work here in Ma. So I bought some phones and they did not work. Cingular couldn't even tell me what freq they were using exactly for over 6 weeks and a documented 28 calls. Finally a rep in San Diego told me what was going on around the country. The local rep has no idea as they tell everyone that both the 850 & 1900 are used at the same time. So I sold my phones on Ebay âšī¸ I just wanted to know if and when they would use the 1900 here. Thanks!

đ Thanks. I have seen this but 1900 is not working in this area and there is no target date set according to Cingular reps. With one of the phones which was 900/1800/1900, their reps and techs from here and their main office "assured" me that the 900 "WILL" work on the 850 band.
Hopefully 1900 will be up someday but right now only T-Mobile & AT&T use 1900 and AT&T doesn't have a lisc for 800 according to their rep. Many thanks!

OMG, you can't be serious, 900mhz is EGSM that absolutly will NOT work in the US except for small areas in Washington DC.

đ Yeah, whoever told you that a GSM 850 phone will work on 900 is crazy. Besides, he's right. The only 900MHz coverage is in Washington D.C.

đ I know! I went round and round for weeks seeing if these phones would work and the the word "should" always came up!! From what I was told-they hold a lisc for 1900 but have no plans on using it here. When you look at the 1900 coverage for Cingular pulling up the map through say the NY area--it looks great but do the same thing through the Ma site and reality sets in. TY

That's crazy. Cingular does crazy things like that sometimes. For instance, if I live in Detroit and I have a GSM phone that works on 850/1900 and I go west on I-94, the phone will say no service. But I know for a fact that if someone with the exact same phone(850/1900) comes here from NYC, their phone will work. It's got something to do with your home id codes. You would think it would just work on all their network, regardless of where you're from.

đ¤ Indeed one would think it would be common sense! If AT&T & T-Mobile have only 1900 here, why wouldn't Cingular? 850 is cheaper and how can they call 850/1800/1900 world phones when they use 900/1800 not 850! Why get one then? They are expanding rapidly but their phones are boring in comparison. They are pushing the S/E 616 but with such small memory-it's almost useless. They did just get some new LG phones but they do lack in getting us all excited. Perhaps that new Moto in Dec will be a reality!!

As I understand it there were plans to make the 850 into the voice channel and the 1900 into the data channel. It seems that data stands a better transmission at the 1.9 MHz. I haven't kept track of that idea so I can't provide a link. In some of the central eastern areas only 850 MHZ licenses were available so those areas will not be useful for 1900 MHz.
A lot of people are sticking to their TDMA phones seeing that they already have coverage there. Other folks are investing in GAIT phones until this hodgepodge of coverage becomes more realistic.

Thanks! Cingular does have the 1900 but no one knows when they will have it up and running in New England. It is far more cost effective to run 850 only! đŗ đŗ đŗ

Not exactly. The 800 starts at. The 850 starts around 845 and up. Both are in a small band range which miss each other. Some of the earlier confusion was due to postings of the 850 as a 900- which it is not. Comes close to it but just not the same.
Recently Police outfits started crying foul. With celluar now going into the 850 range we are coming closer to public safety ranges, and they are worried about cell phone and PS freqs mixing. This was not a concern earlier as PS groups had largely abandoned the 800-820 range for the current 853-868 range. Many PS groups do not want to go into the upper digital realm- it cost too much. But the cell phone providers argue that they need the 850 for better coverage to more customers.

It depends on your area, but in most parts of the country, the answer is they won't.
Like any other carrier, spectrum is key. That comes first - all other concerns are secondary. Cingular has 850 spectrum covering most of the country. In other areas, they have 1900. In a few areas, they have both.
There isn't "spare spectrum" floating around that they can just buy. The only way they can get new 1900 spectrum is to buy it from someone willing to sell. Spectrum is scarce, so not many companies are willing to sell.
