Out of Control Teenager

Cellular Dude

May 5, 2009, 10:04 PM
Hey folks...
I could use some direction. I have a 16 y/o son who went way over on his minutes and texts causing a large bill. I took his phone, put in a lock code and restricted his calls to only his phone book, so he can stay in touch with imediate family for emergencies. Within 4 hours he figured out how to add an additional number to an existing contact and therefore could call whomever he wanted. We I confronted him on this he showed me how he could also reset the phone and erase the lock code giving himself access to call anyone he wanted. I am hoping there is a software / website that I could set up an account with that will restrict him through the cellular service provider rather than through the phone.
Any recomendations would be ...

I would suggest prepaid - that way he can use it if necessary, and if he gets crazy he can't rack up a huge bill.

I want to limit who he calls and who can call him. I want to limit his calls to family only.

Get him that Fire Fly thing. lol.

Doesn't AT&T have some controll thing like Verizon has? Only YOU can controll who he calls, for how long, how many texts he can send, and how many mins he can use. I know T-Mobile and Verizon have this, I think AT&T does too.

It's called Smart Limits. With Smart Limits, Cellular Dude can do just that, place restrictions on his son's line so the kid can only call family.

Smart Limits are the way to go. You can set limits on-line for messaging, downloading, browsing, and outbound calling (unfortunately can't set limites for minutes or picture/video messaging, but you can block the latter and address the former by restricing the numbers he can call). Check out info at

What carrier are you with? You also posted this to the Alltel forum and depending on what carrier you have, that could make a difference too.

Here's an idea take the phone away from him and if he needs to call you make sure he has the change for the payphone.

How bout this, be a better parent take his phone from him, he isnt going to die without his phone. How did you do when you were a teenager w/o a cell phone just fine. Step your parenting up and get your kid inline, stop trying to make AT&T your nanny.

Kayslay34,
Thank you for your well thought advice. It never occured to me that this was my fault.
I am simply trying to limit who my son is in contact with. He is far from being a bad kid. I want to limit who he can call and text and I want to limit who can call him and text him. My son having a cell phone is as much of a convience to me than it is to him.
But again I appreciate your well thought through opinion.
