SMS messages: Use your voicemail's paging system and are limited to 160 characters, thus, it's called SHORT MESSAGING SERVICE.
Text messaging from your Blackberry (MMS), uses data and works via the internet, therefore those messages are counted separately. MMS is multimedia messaging.
