They have always been about simplicity.
The biggest strong point of the iPhone line is the easy of use. It might have had a few cutting edge features when it first came out but days, it has been surpassed by many others.
There are several phones with bigger & better screens, more powerful processors, better cameras, and far more customizable interfaces.
Apple fans like things SIMPLE.
They have never been the "deep thinking" crowd and prefer simplicity and form over substance and function.
Most Android users liked and understood the move Inception.
Most iPhone users didn't.
