I hope the CU gets their way on this one. In fact, I think they are dead-on in all their critiques of the wireless industry.

😎 Finally. This will most likely mean no more FREE phones. If the phone is unlocked, you pay full price.
Probably will also mean no contracts either. Ahhh, the pending chaos...
But I propose a comprimise. Discount = contract = locked phone. Unlocked phone = expired contract. You wanna switch and pay the EARLY TERMINATION FEE = unlocked phone. Now that's simple!
Cingular is already doing something like this. You bring your own phone to them = no contract. Now that's a concept. It is my hope that all wireless companies start doing this. Make the consumer totally responsible for their equipment. Wireless companies don't make phones, they make air time. Freeing them up from the phone business will (maybe) allow them to build awes...

🤣 This makes a really good point about why phones are free to begin with. This is the solution to contracts and choosing the better provider. If this went into effect the power would be completely in the hands of the consumer. What else would people possibly bitch about if this went through? 🤣

If you want to know what you'll pay for a handset with no subsidy, take a look at phone prices in Europe. Phones priced at $100 here are $200-300 in England.

I am a wireless dealer. If I pay $100 bucks for a phone, I can afford to take a $100 loss on that phone, because of the commission I'll earn from the carrier. If you remove the subsidy lock, the customer could activate with me today, walk out the door, deactivate, then take the phone to another carrier using the same technology down the road, and activate the phone.

Commissions will likely drop, because deact rates will rise. And I'm gonna have to make money on the handset, so I don't lose money on the sale. As it is today, that $100 is free. If this goes through, that $100 phon...

Isn't that why most dealer have their own contract. Your buying the phone with me if you don't fufill your end of the bargain and stay on with this carrier until however many months down the road so as I can make my commission then I will charge you 'X' amount of $$$$ All dealers are shady anyway. It would probably be a better world not to have Wireless dealers. All customer might get consistant info and just BS to make a sale. Just sell the phone make up your own price get over it and stop bitching.

You have no idea what you are talking about. I don't do inhouse contracts, and bend over backwards to help my customers.

Yes, some smelly folks are in the wireless industry. But that doesn't mean we all are.

And I guess the next time you are on the highway, and there is a head on collision just ahead, the folks bleeding inside the wrecked cars will be real happy to know that since all the places to buy cell phones are gone, cause they couldn't afford to stay open, they'll have to hope someone happens by with a CB radio.

The US is a safer place because every man can afford a cell phone. But everyman can't afford a $150 cell phone.

Dealers have their own contracts to save their own ass. If I sell a phone and a customer cancels within six months, I get charged back on my commissions. The dealer still comes out on top. Get your crap together.
