Good memory you've got there. Seems like ATT has some very anti-consumer policies.

I really do wonder why so many customers continue to cling on to ATT.

They had the iphone. people are jumping ship I'm sure. They are so expensive and I can't see why anyone would pay them. I and when they buy t-mobile I'll be leaving once they force me to migrate. Prices are going to keep rising as they find ways to balance their capital for the stockholders. They can keep their subsidized phone and contract.

Which carrier will you go with at that point?

I don't remember hearing about any financial problems justifying a price increase. This is really arrogant on the part of at&t to command a higher premium from their loyal customers with such subpar service. Seems like another way to build up capital for the big merger. Anyone eagerly anticipating this merger better get used to this....

I don't remember reading "financial problems" as the reason for the change anywhere in the news item, either. 😕

i havent been in contract since 2007 for a reason. i dont want to be. neither do other consumers. for the most part i get my phones on ebay or used some other means. i use third party insurance for my iphone as well. a thrifty customer will find ways to not pay these rates. the warranty is still in effect no matter where you buy it as long as it is w/in one year of original purchase date.

i guess maybe i dont see the problem. it doesnt matter if it is att or verizon or anyone else.

This is ridiculous...the reason for an early upgrade fee is to prevent people from trying to upgrade every 6 months for trivial reasons, it has nothing to do with 'financial reasons' for 'trying to raise money'

Every time someone 6 months into a contract demands a discount on a brand new phone the carrier loses money. Charging them a fee to do the early upgrade discourages people from wanting to do that....

It's just good business sense, want to change your phone every 6 months? Pay no commitment price.

I will probably go with Sprint or if Metro PCS has better coverage I might go with them......more than likely Sprint though. I read that they are going LTE as well and they offer the most bang for the buck. More expensive than T-Mobile but not over priced like the other two.

Port out to T-Mobile...and here they come throwing thirty-nine billion dollars at the *Bleeping* Germans. Now where to? Sprint?

The key phrase you are missing here:

“Only customers who are not yet upgrade eligible or who do not want to sign a contract are impacted"

And that is a very, very, very small number of people.

Grow up and get over your entitlement mentality. You aren't entitled to a discount on a new phone every 6 months.

I don't really understand why people are getting upset with this beyond the initial shock of seeing "price bump".

The early upgrade program is there as a fall back for people who screw there phones up before the contract is up, and didn't want to get insurance, and they don't want to buy a cheap prepaid phone and they don't want to pay full retail.

That and there is also the fact that if you actually NEED a new phone urgently for some reason (lost, stolen or whatnot) and don't have insurance then you can call customer care and they can do an early upgrade for you with NO FEE!

This is just to discourage people from trying to abusing the system by getting constant upgrades for no real reason......

As an AT&T customer service rep, I beg of you...PLEASE don't go running around advising people to call in expecting a free early (or even fully eligible) upgrade! We have standards we have to uphold to also, not to say that I agree with the price increase, but you have no idea how many jackoffs I speak to daily saying things like "well, this guy I know told me I could get (insert phone here) for free!" They had the chance to get insurance, they chose not to. Not our fault 👿

I didn't say they could get a free phone, I said that early upgrades done through customer care are not charged the early upgrade fee, which is a true statement. And I said that to qualify for there has to be an 'urgent need' which is also true.

It requires an override from management, so technically there is a fee but smartass customers think they can get the world when they speak to a supervisor because of D-Bags telling them it can happen. 🙄

Technically a manager override is required for an early upgrade only if you are also doing a price override, or if it doesn't say 'secured' when you check for the upgrade eligibility. If it says 'secured' and they aren't asking for a price override you can do it yourself without manager approval.

Truthfully, an 'upgrade' means 'contract extension' so if the customer is willing to pay the standard upgrade pricing and sign a contract extension, it is 'win win' for the company.

The problem comes when people demand the phone be free, or worse, they demand a free phone with no contract extension. But thankfully for those cases you do have the uber-cheap phones to give the whining maggots...I always use to give them a Motorola EM330,...

...and stop attacking people just because you disagree with their opinions. Attack the opinion...not the person.
