the exit numbers help if you are interested in the distance, since the numbers denote that

so if you give some1 direction to your place, you will tell them to exit 38 on freeway instead of telling them to exit on Broadway ave?

If I could remember it like that, I think i would but the population calls it by the street. Do you do to macdonals and ask for a number 1 or do you ask for a Big Mac combo large? Isnt the number easier?

Isn't there usually signs that say 1 mile to Broadway Ave?

I do actually, especially if they are from out of state. They can then use the mile markers to see how far away they are if they do not have GPS.

That depends on what state you are in. Some states have the exits correspond to mile markers, while other just use numeric order and in no way correspond to distance.

This actually reminds me of something my wife and I go through. I tend to refer to exits by the street name or route number, but she uses exit number. However, if it's only going to be one or the other, exit number is probably best because it can be read more quickly and is easier to prepare for based on previous exits.

Yeah, in Minnesota I don't think the number has anything to do with the mile marker.

Exit Numbers are way better. Let's say you're exiting onto Lake Street. Thing is, there's usually 2 exits - one for Lake Street going east, the other for Lake Street going west. Well which one does it want you to take? You could try to figure out which one is east and which one is west - but it's easier to just use the specific exit number that's on the sign.

Maybe if you paid for the GPS service you could warrant a complaint but its free. Go buy a GPS application that gives you street names if you want street names, but don't complain about a free service.

(if you can find a GPS application less than 50MB 🤣 )

There are already several in the android market.

the 50MB limit is ONLY for the portion that is stored on the phone. If you have additional data (maps, names, voice) you just make that download to SD card and you're good to go.

the 50MB limit isn't what a lot of people are making it up to be

Most people know the NAME of an Exit, not the number. To provide the best experience Google should state the Name and Number of the exits.

And for us that live in cities or areas with multiple freeways, the name is much better since exit numbers are often duplicated on different freeways.

Exit # 23 on Interstate 5 is obviously very different from Exit # 23 on Interstate 101.

Mine has always said "Take exit 53 south towards Town/City"

Stuff like "Take the blue route exit" are terms made up by locals that would confuse someone who doesn't live in that area.

This makes no sense though....if you are on Interstate 101 and are prompted to take exit 23, are you going to start looking for the exit 23 on interstate 5?

There is merit to both sides:

Exit number are great, but most humans remembers names better than numbers and exit numbers have been known to change (thinking of the exits on I-287 in New Jersey and the whole I-86 / I-84 debacle outside of Hartford).

Street names are harder for GPS programs to manage (since you would need to build the dictionary for all sounds) and many highways have multiple exits for the same street (US-1 intersects with I-95 hundreds of places on the east coast, and every town has a Main Street).

Would be nice if you could choose (grin).

If you don't like it don't use it and buy a GPS. Its a free app and a free service. Don't expect to get all the bells and whistles when its FREE.
