Do you remember seeing them advertise the N900?
Neither do I. The phone was meant for a niche market-geeks- before going onto the mainstream. That's pretty good sales for a product that they never advertised at all.

...to make money. Just like any other company. Have you used a Meego handset? I haven't. And I'm not ready to dismiss it because all the kiddies can't look past Android/iOS4.

Actually, i had an n900 for several months. Great Hardware(as always), incomplete software.
Just as an example, they released a phone without any way to 'wipe' your personal data off it. [actually, there was a way but you had to run ubuntu and 20 commands later and finally reflash the phone]. Epic failure.

As far as profitability is concerned, Nokia is and will continue to hemorrhage in sales of its smartphones (internationally). In 2009, they sold 10% less than the year before. Smartphone sales used to be very profitable, but their earnings have been diminishing globally too thanks to blackberry, iphone, and android.

You might want to consider reading a few of Eldar Murtazin's articles such as this one
