U.S. carriers have a cattle prod up their 😲 when it comes to unlocked phones.
AT&T being the most selfish of all of them.

Maybe, but I don't have one problem whatsoever using my Nexus One on AT&T, and similar to TMO. I've used unlocked unbranded N95's and E71's as well too. As far as they're concerned, you have the proper plan, and pay your bill they could careless.

True if you are coming to them. It means $$$$ revenue. If you have one of their phones, God forbid they give you a subsidy unlock code. It is like asking for the location of the Holy Grail.

Why should they subsidize the cost of the phone you just plan on taking to another carrier then? The whole reason is to protect the investment they have in the device and get some profitability out of it. You can blame them for that. Business is business after all for anyone. I've had no problems getting the codes myself from them after I've completed my required term.
