I made my first 3g video call from a mobile in 2003 since then I have never bought a phone without a front facing camera. its nothing new! granted it hasn't taken off as much as japaan, but for gods sake its been around for ages. I would be rather upset if it suddenly becomes popular now that the iphone belatedly supports it. It wasn't used because people didn't like having to use headsets or speakers, the 3g coverage is still not guaranteed (has to be on both ends) and no-one knew whether the other end had a video capable handset. neither motorola or apple have rectified any of the above issues, and apple aren't even using 3g video call standards- wifi to wifi and apple to apple means you'll still have to plan calls in advance. not much use...

I agree. My old Samsung B2700 has video calling but useless in the US. This will probably take another 10 years to become a commonly used form of communication.

10-Years????

Get real. More like 2 years max!!!

It has to start somewhere so complaining about how would you know if the other person has a capable phone and blah blah blah? It has to start in order for it to be a standard. So in about 2 years it will be rolled out completely. It will start in smarthphone and then in the regular phones they will probably only equip one camera on the front face and with some cheap program that allows the VC to keep cost still affordable for those who don't want smartphones. 2 years, max!

As far as video calling on cellular networks alone, three to five years sounds reasonable. Once the infrastructure is in place the manufacturers will pop in chips for our frequencies and sell their video enabled phones to our market. That seems to be our lag time behind Asia. The most likely scenario is that every Starbucks will have everyone talking to their I phones in front of their faces. I think video calls will be the true revolution in communication.

Yep, yep, it'll be perticularly useful for "phone-sex" 🙂 you can call up a girl and ask her to strip when she can't be there in person 😁
