It is because of these allegations that Verizon is now charging the mandatory 9.99 data packages. People were "accidentally" using data features. I hope you enjoy your 1.99 back, because now to even have the better phones it is gonna cost you at least 9.99 a month.

Most likely that will happen. Then all carriers will do the same because it will be a huge money maker. Only in America!

OR they could actually just deny access when you don't have a data plan, instead of ambushing people with fees.

You do have a plan, you have a pay per use plan. Not being ambushed at all. If you use it you pay, if you dont use it you dont pay. Kinda like pay per view TV.

Thats what they should do. Verizon should disable, or block data access to phones that don't require the $9.99 data plan. They also need to lower the $29.99 unlimited data plan. V-cast used to be $15.00. Why should I pay the same price for data as a blackberry user if I have a LG8360.

I don't understand why people are making such a big deal over $1.99 a month. When you add up rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance, groceries, entertainment and other bills, $1.99 a month is pocket change!

People complain because Verizon like to nickle and dime their customers and they get tired of it.

No people complain because they assume they see a chance to make a quick buck.

When I worked for them, you wouldn't believe the number of customers I came in screaming about data charges. I ask them if they ever browsed ringtones.. and SURPRISE they did.

yes.. about people "accidentally" using data.. let me tell you a story of what happened to me. I am a VZW employee, I know how the systems work. I added a line to my employee account for my mother, the day I got the phone I went over to her house on my lunch break while she was at work, I activated the phone and left it on the kitchen table for her, I got back to work 20 mins later and added blocks to the line through our website and called into our employee phone team and had them add the universal data block to the line... on my next bill I had a .99 data charge on it (as employees we are only charged .99 per MB). I didnt waste my time calling in over the .99 and from taking calls on a regular basis from customers complaining about the MB ...

also backup assistant should be both free to download and use. I think the way it works is that when you download backup assistant the system ignores the first MB of data used for that month. (I am not positive, I read at one point how it made it free but I dont remember exactly)

no, currently you have to pay for the download if you don't have a data package. that might change since more stores are getting rid of Cellbrite machines.

Very true. Usually when you get pushed (lawsuits) you tend to push back harder (9.99 required data packages). I liked it better when it was optional, but I think the combo of 25mb of data and mobile email is still a good value, at least for someone like me. I like being able to check email a couple times a day and I don't mind paying 33 cents per day to do it. Plus, for Verizon/Vodafone 1 billion is going to be drop in the bucket in the long run.
