How can this be a problem?

It clearly states its an opt-out for paper bills, in todays age of energy conservation & the push to reduce waste, it makes perfect sense to charge for unnecessary waste of paper. We all know what happens to you detailed billing statements when you are done, either in the trash, or in a recycle bin. Which in tern wastes more energy in disposing it the needed to create it...

This isn't about detailed statements anymore, the fee they're referring to now is for basic statements.

Regardless of the kind of statement, its still an unneeded waste of paper.

For some, yes, but a lot of customers do not do electronic statements for anything, whether it is due to a lack of computer/internet access, basic recordkeeping, or otherwise. Many large cities and a ton of rural areas do not have easy access to the technology that makes e-billing a convenience. Furthermore, charging for a basic bill sets a bad precedent. It's like ordering food to go and then being charged a couple of bucks on top of it because you made the order in the first place. Providing a bill is a basic cost of doing business.
