Verizon Plans 8,000 Job Cuts to Fight Costs

Something just doesn't seem right here. . .

Verizom is a company with a whopping 87.7m customers, they just spent a good chunk of change, how much was it like $26B or so buying Alltel, and they're laying off 8k workers.

Verizon seems to be a healthy company to me.

Yep, and I'm confident Las Vegas will be among the 20 launch cities. I don't know why I'm so sure, but we'll see sometime in the next 6-8 months.

And most probably a great majority of the 8000 will be Alltel employees that VZW absorbed in the merger. If VZW wanted to control costs, they should not have bought Alltel. So yes, it doesn't make sense.

It is simply a product of the current economic climate. Verizon as a whole is a very healthy company. But even the best run companies have to purge certain expenditures every now and then. I am sure this is a preemptive move to keep from having to let go of more in the future. Just my two cents.

Good assessment, and you are 100% correct. It just goes to show you the type of hope our anointed messiah has inspired with all the change he has brought us. Verizon had very good performance with its key metrics.

However, just like every other business in the United States they are in fear of what regulations might occur. Between corporate bail outs, industries collapsing, and hyper inflation ...

Most of them were laid off. Less than 50% were kept nationwide. I'm guessing that most of the layoffs will come wireline side to be honest.
