Since I'm a small indirect dealer of all carriers I'm glad they are doing this. I can't afford working models so I tell my customers to check them out at the corporate stores then come by here where I won't make them pay twice as much and I won't make them send in rebates. Works every time..

As a fellow small indirect dealer, at&t should allow you $0 demo lines to display live working phones, if you have a live bar.
Seems risky to send off a potential customer to a COR store, to "try" live phones.
Are you giving them instant rebates up front?

Of my 4 carriers 3 give me 1 live phone each, usually a high end (Palm Pre, HTC G1 ect.) but att nothing. We do give the rebates up front and credit the activation fee's (except att)back as a bill credit. About 99% of the time if I write the customer a quote, corporate stores won't match it and they return.

Wow!
I didnt know at&t still allowed no-exclusive dealers. Here in NTX, they disbanded those guts in January of 2007. What market are you in?

Austin, TX. I notice Best Buy and Sams Club wireless now have no rebates as well.
...
do non-exclusive get national access? it took us (indirect N. Texas) forever to get it.
...
Not all national. I can do most, still don't have Louisiana and a few other places. I always have to check gears first to make sure of the out of market customers.

i work for an authorized agent store for att in mississippi, i've been waiting awhile for live demo phones.

Where is "NTX"? I'm guessing North Texas?

I think that's a good idea (even though I'm with another carrier). There are two AT&T locations within my neighborhood and everytime I go in to check out the smartphones they don't work. I'm always told to go to a "corporate" store instead to see how they function.
Sorry but I'm not driving another 15 miles out of my way in Northern Va traffic to check out a working device when Sprint and Verizon stores are much closer to me.

Well heck, you can always read online reviews on websites like Phone Scoop, Phone Arena, and GSM Arena, all sorts of reviews out there help figuring out which phones are right for you.
Theres a lot of stuff coming next year, like bluetooth 3.0, and USB 3.0, and hopefully better batteries & processors. So I'm in no rush at all to upgrade, plus there are new versions of Symbian due out.

I always read up on new devices through Phone Scoop etc before I go into the stores anyway. I like to test the devices out to see how they feel quality-wise, responsiveness, call clarity, ease of use.
Thanks for information regarding Bluetooth 3.0 - time go read up on it to see if I should hold out also.
