T-Mobile (and other prepaid carriers) loses money for this
not many know, even prepaid phones are subsidized, even only a few

Too bad for them. If they sold the phones at an honest price, rather than making people think the phone is cheap and then overcharging them for airtime, this "problem" would not exist.
