Very sad day that should not happen. Just too many areas of the US that are still analog only.

A few phones offered by Verizon and Sprint are tri-mode meaning that they are capable of operating on AMPS. And yes, if you know which ones they are you can/could buy them new from the carriers or on ebay.

Its not a federal requirement to turn off AMPS on Feb 18, it is just permitted to be done if they want to.

Quite a few small AMPS carriers will remain online for quite some time now. Some very small carriers just have AMPS or AMPS/TDMA hardware anyway. It would be silly to turn it off.

And its not like both AMPS and analog tv users haven't been given notice, and excluding analog tv, who's frequencies have been allocated for other uses. There is no rule that AMPS has to be shut off, more that carriers can discontinue using them.

Of the 4 major and 3 or 4 middle size carriers, none sell AMPS only phones nor have they sold them for quite sometime. The only major issue is onStar and if GM can't get their act togeather on this, don't blame the carriers. Time to move on.

I have a deactive Sprint phone with analog capability, and Verizon is the preferred roaming partner here in San Francisco, and it is not deactive yet.

So, Im checking every few hours to see if Verizon kills Analog here.

If you wondering why AT&T isnt working in SF, its supposedly because AT&T dumped analog here once they moved to TDMA, which is true. CellularONE had analog, bought out by AT&T and went total TDMA, which is also off.
