Hold Up

So, was the hold-up of these smart phones/PDAs due to the new calling/data plans Verizon is working out or the new fun phones they just unveiled?

Knowledge of these phones has been passed around for the better part of the year on at least three of these devices ... Stringent testing aside, since the specs seem to be the same as purported months ago, I wonder why it has taken so long for Verizon to *officially* announce their releases.

I've been patiently waiting for these specific phones to come out on the market but my patience is really wearing thin. And it looks like I'll still have to wait a little longer for the HTC variants.

VZW may have been waiting for the Qualcom lawsuit to blow over.

Well, I just ordered the Samsung i760 over the phone (as opposed to Online), and it should arrive early next week. I'm still waiting for the HTC 6800 to come out, but I'll at least give this one a test drive before (most likely) returning it for HTC version.

By the way, I found out from the sales rep that GPS is on the phone but not enabled. However, this phone does not have V-Cast capabilities, so you're not stuck with VZ-Navigator (I hope I understood the guy correctly). I *can* however, download GPS software that works with WM6 to use.

So, it doesn't look like Verizon is crippling this phone to death. 😉

I'm glad to hear it! I had hoped to try out the Garmin GPS software on my phone and save myself $350 for a dedicated GPS device.

P.S. - I ordered an i760 online and it should arrive Mon. I would only return the i760 if VZW offered the Tilt (which its not) or the HTC Touch II. I'm really hoping for more WM6 overlays similar to the ones created by HTC on the Touch. I saw one the other day for handling the contact list.

So, did you receive the phone yet? What do you think? I'm still waiting for mine...it should hopefully arrive today.

There is no "true" GPS on the phone - like the i730. It has some rudimentary "tower based" location services - but you'll need an external GPS device connected via Bluetooth for the GPS software to work.

I started to suspect as much since my search for GPS software for the phone yielded nothing. Oh well, I'm waiting for the HTC anyway and am only going to test drive this one for comparison sakes.

Thanks for the update.
