I think that some of the statments in this story are not accurate.

CDMA carriers are just starting to allow plan changes without contract extensions.........USCC has been doing this for well over a year now. And Sprint will let you change within the first 6 months without a contract extension.

Most GSM carriers will let you change without a contract extension......T-mobile will make you resign at least a one year and I'm fairly positive that AT&T does the same...

what gives

Yep! It's called freedom!!! And we AT&T customers can also go month-to-month after the contract is fulfilled!!! I've been going month-to-month for 2yrs now!!! And I intend to continue doing so until they decide to put something out that actually impresses me, and grabs my attention!!!

Yeah well, I thought I heard that with evil Verizon when your 2yr is up, you have to sign a new 2yr.

I've been wondering whether that's true about evil Verizon or not.

Verizon allows you to go month-to-month after your contract has expired. They DO NOT force you to sign a new contract.

The way they entice you into renewing your contract is to offer you a new phone at a discounted price. Which I believe is pretty much how everyone does it.

Same with Sprint, but I would love to see all phone carries go to the no contract renewal unless you get a new phone or some monthly discount. I hate renewing for getting more minutes. I would switch but I like the speed Sprints goes

ATT doesn't require a new contract to change your minute plan, what they will do is take away you roll over minutes. this extension crap is basically a cdma thing.

I have been out of the wireless game for a couple years but I used to work at Alltel and they started the no contract for plan changes thing in May of 2005. I'm from WV and at that time of the competitors here in WV... mainly Cingular and Sprint, we were the only ones to do that.

No you can sign up for a new contract fot promotions such as the new every two and a new promotional price for a phone but DO NOT have to. Also Verizon Wireless deducts five dollars each month from the early termination fee you stay with them.
So you pay less if you leave latter in your contract.

T-Mobile only makes you extend your contract if you switch to a special promotional plan. Otherwise, you do not have to extend or sign a new contract.

ATT only extends your contract when you change your plan after the half way mark. If you signed a two year contract you can change the plan within the first year with no extensions.

That's pretty much the same as Verizon's current policy. Since you typicially sign a 2-yr contract to get the phone, that would supercede the 1-yr contract extension that happens with a VZW price plan change.

Now if they can get some cool phones and lower data prices...

I'm on the phone with an AT&T rep right now nd he says otherwise.

Only equipment upgrades require a new contract.

Only a new phone extends. And if you have 4 phones, it only extends the contract on that one.

Yeah, this past April, I added my mother to my accnt, and like you said, and like I made sure of!!! Only her phone # is under contract, and not mine, which is the primary. I've been going month to month for 2yrs, and will continue to do so until AT&T actually offers something that is impressive.

USCC HAS let their subs do this for some time, but sprint and alltel just recently got with the program (less than a year ago for each, i believe). while GSM carriers have offered this for years. i have switched plans without renewing since ATT was pacbell and only recently after voicestream became tmo. the replies here appear to back me up.
