IOS 14.5 lacks mask unlock.

There is nothing to unlock my phone when I wear a mask. I did some investigating and found only those who own an Apple Watch will get this feature. This is probably meant for force those who want this feature to buy an Apple Watch. Not me, I have no use personally. I'll have to stick to the hassle and use my numerical password.

14.5 doesn't lack mask unlock; the watch has always been a component of it from day 1. I don't think it's a ploy to sell watches, but rather the "mechanics" of it.

The watch can be unlocked once the phone recognizes you w/o a mask (or by your code), and will stay unlocked as long as you don't take it off. This is an extension of that - it uses a partial FaceID (because most of your face is covered), combined with the watch to be "secure enough" to unlock. Without the watch part of it, FaceID doesn't have enough to work with to unlock securely. It literally would just see a pair of eyes. Since it isn't an eye based biometric, but rather a dotmap of the entire face, it needs another somewhat trusted element, and that happens to be the wat...

That's correct. If FaceID can only see half your face, it can try to authenticate you, but it can't be confident enough to be considered secure by Apple's standards. The watch adds another authentication factor, making it adequately secure. It makes perfect sense from a security standpoint.

It says right in this article: "for users with an Apple Watch".

Our original article on this feature back in February was careful to say: "provided the user is also wearing an Apple watch".

That's always been the promise.
