If you have 5G in your area, yes. If you don't, no. So far, 5G is just a years long unfulfilled promise. I live in Phoenix, 6th most populated city. 5G is available at one stadium downtown and they claim "5G is here!" Hard pass.

I would not buy any phone right now just because it has 5G.

But if you're looking to buy a new high-end phone, buying one with 5G is a good way to future-proof your purchase.

Many of the new 5G phones coming out right now — and the iPhone 12 series in particular — are much more future-proof than the first generation of 5G phones. It matters that they have a newer modem, support both sub-6 and mmWave, support many 5G bands, and support SA networks. The very first 5G phones did not.

If you want the very best 5G experience available two or three years from now, no current phone will give you that. But that may always be the case.
