Why? iPhones, iPads & iPods are not cheap devices. A OtterBox is a tough case to protect what has become a popular albeit delicate piece of computing hardware.

It's not like you're laminating your baseball cards. It's a frickin phone. It's a bunch of electronics squished together and sealed inside a case. If you need a case to protect the case that's already on the device, that wreaks of crappy design. And if you argue that aesthetics are more important than the functional purpose of the case (protecting the electronics) - then I call bull crap. And here's why.
Would YOU buy an iPhone if it came in an Otterbox, if the Otterbox was the actual frickin case? I bet you wouldn't. But you would stick an Otterbox on your existing iPhone (as you've already stated). And why? Not to protect the electronics inside, but to protect the crappy case you're drooling over because it looks so awesome. BUTTTTTTT.....
