You actually can though - that is if you know anything about law. Just like you can either file your own taxes, or pay someone hundreds, if not thousands to do them for you.
I know plenty of people who do their own business taxes and skip paying THOUSANDS to have someone else do them.
Yes, it does cost money to patent stuff - but it's not anywhere near what people claim. If you hire a lawyer to do it for you? Sure.
Since when do lawyers do stuff for cheap? Even though their highly underpaid paralegals do most of the leg work, and they merely show up to state their BAR number and basically say 'prove it'.
