what took RIM so long to give in????? they knew they were goin down so they decided to pay 🙄 .

now let's see what comes of this. i read a while back an article said that even if a settlement was reached shareholders would be ticked for RIM dragging it out so long. anyone see this happening?

What are you talking about? RIM has tried to settle before. And we all know this is a frivolous lawsuit since the USPTO office will decide against NTP. This is just saving RIM from any injunctions that may have arisen before the USPTO was done.

An announcement about the case that actually clarifies something! It's about time. It's sad RIM actually had to pay up, because I don't think NTP really had all of those patents....

WHAT? yes, NTP definitly had those patents, the whole country was watching, so they DEFINITLY had those patents. They 'took one for the team' and paid up so there MILLIONS of users wouldnt have to suffer, GO RIM! you guy rock and it sucked what happened! but they did the right thing.

They had the patents on the concept... RIM created the technology.

They're patent squatters.

I'm glad it's over & RIM can move on from this but I don't think NTP deserved a dime.

The judge during that last hearing said it best. At the time, RIM was clearly in violation of NTP. NTP was a company that was formed to launch the same kind of service as RIM. But after it collapsed, the owner turned it into a paten company in hopes to protect his ideas. RIM was fortunate enough to see that NTP's patents were invalidated, but that was AFTER they knew they violated patent laws. The judge didn't want the hearings to drag on. At the moment the hearings were done, some of the patents in question were still valid and thus RIM would have been guilty. RIM wanted to drag out the court precedings until the patents were found invalid, which they judge wasn't in the mood for because NTP would appeal and prolong it even longer.

It was BS that the judge would not let the Patent office make the decision on whether or no tht patents were valid before he had a hearing. Having the patents riled invalaid would have sunk NTP's entire case and RIM would not have had to pay anything at that point because NTP would not have had a leg to stand on. Our leagal sysytem sometimes does not make any sense. I do not know how the judge thought it would be fair to make a ruling without having all of the fact surrounding the case.
