Seems a dual mode phone would make more sense

Have a deal with a current cell provider to roam when no satellite signal is available.

yea thats also good.

to have dual mode phones are very good, but there needs to be more coverage and cellular coverage in doors and in many places are hurting. perhaps satelite can help.

I kinda like Thuraya's (Europe, Africa, Asia) model better. Thuraya uses GSM and switches to satellite when GSM isn't available. If you're outside of Thuraya's coverage area, like in the western hemisphere, you can roam on another carrier's GSM network.

It's a pretty slick setup.

Not quite sure. I know they offer a prepaid option, but I'm not sure of the price.

I'm US based and am mainly aware of them as a business based on some research I've done into cell communications in various parts of the world. I didn't delve into pricing unfortunately.
