Sliding keyboards seem 2 b da big thing now on mobile devices.

I have notice a lot of cellular phone manufactures are using the sliding keyboard form factor now. I wonder if this form factor could some day replace the traditional flip design.

I good feature the sliding design has over the flip is, user can operate the device even when it is close. Also there is no need for a caller id display on the outside the device which can reduce manufacture costs.

Yep. Another big advantage of sliders (well, regular ones, not sideways ones like this) is that they're easy to open with one hand; much easier than most clamshells.

The downside is that the display is exposed and not protected from scratches. And with a touchscreen device like this, it's even more crucial because they break easily if not protected. I'm a thow-it-in-my-pocket kind of guy, and I've broken the screen on every touchscreen device I've owned... ☹️

rich may be tiny, but he's strong! i probably don't hold on to touch-screen devices long enough to break them, but i break laptops fairly regularly (hooray for applecare) and i can tell you i have scratched the HECK outta my s710 screen and i've only had that since january. when the screen is on you cant tell, but when it's off it looks like i took sandpaper to it. all the special hardened screens in the world are no match for whatever else is in my pockets i guess. and i don't even keep my keys in them

Considering how many PDAs I've had and the usage they get from me (e.g. TONS), I've been extremely fortunte never to lose one to scratches or outright damage. I usually put a screen protector on them right away (even have one on my SMT-5600) and then manage to put them in some kind of case or holder that protects them without adding too much bulk.

So I would have to guess that the moment you slide the keyboard out, the PDA is (hopefully) smart enough to automatically switch to Landscape display mode. It would be pretty dumb if you had to make that switch manually.

As with other first-generation hardware and software, tempting as it may be to have THE newest toy, I'll probably wait out this first wave of Windows Mobile 5.0 and hardware to go with and get the Siemens SX66, then get the Wizard 2.0 or at least wait until Windows Mobile 5.0 Second Edition comes out.
