so if I had an EDGE device, I could just use it. Or would I have to have a data plan with a carrier that supports an EDGE data network?

But think about it this way though. lets say i have a CDMA carrier enabled bluetooth phone. this way my cdma phone can be used as a modem for this device and with out increasing the cost of the device for having edge they can sell more units.

So, this device would only be used where a wireless connection was present? (bluetooth, wifi, etc.)?

Sorry...this device may work for some people...but I would be throwing away $350 for this device...I would get absolute no use out of it...

Yeah this thing is a piece of crap. I guess I don't care if it has cellular connectivity. Nokia needs to get their heads out of their asses.

This isn't aimed at kiosk jockeys like yourself. This is aimed at the mobile professional, who would find a plethora of uses for it.

by connecting over wi-fi or bluetooth (and a mobile phone), nokia has actually extended the usable life of the 770. imagine it had, EDGE and came out this summer. then, when cingular launched hsdpa about 6 months later, the 770 would be stuck with a slow data connection (like the sony T350). instead, you're free to upgrade your phone, and with it the speed at which can access the net via the 770.

initially this device was just as much a shock for us as for you. who would have thought nokia, which do cellular data so well, would release a device with no cellular radio? so we wanted/expected cellular access in there too. but nokia's trying to revive an old concept in a new way. maybe it will work this time around. if not, you can always buy...

It's not designed with that in mind. There are other wireless products out there worth buying other than cell phones. If you're a professional, and you desire dependable, high speed, wireless access...Wi-Fi has a great advantage over just about anything on the market now.
