Why would U.S. carriers bother?

Why bother upgrading HSPA+ when everyone's going LTE now? Or is this technology being designed with non-U.S. carriers in mind?

T-Mobile is going to stay with HSPA+ for their 1900Mhz network, they may be interested in this. Also, for HSPA+ 84.4Mbps networks that are using this new technology, those networks would be pretty damn fast. Not every carrier in the world is going to LTE, and not everybody wants an LTE device.

right but they're keeping hspa+42 for 1900 like Tofuchong said, so they can still use the tech to speed up their network and improve battery life for they're non LTE phones.. which is all of them at this point

That's a mistake.

I dont know how much it would cost for them to update their network to HSPA+ 84.4, but T-Mobile has always had something that sets them apart from the other major carriers in the United States. Moving forward with their LTE network and HSPA+ 42.2 on 1900Mhz, they won't really stand out much. Sure they can attract some new iPhone users that now get 3G or 4G@14.4 with the 4S, but the 84.4 Mbps network would have really set them apart from the other carriers. LTE devices are usually more expensive and have less battery life then a comparable HSPA+ device.

Just sayin

There are millions of HSPA+ phones out there on the networks. They won't be going away tomorrow.
I have an HSPA+ phone now, and I'm not planning upgrading for over a year from now, and if there are good HSPA+ phones that are cheaper that LTE phones available, I'll go that direction.
