AT&T's 3G speeds are anything but clunky; they're far faster than T-Mo's. As for 4G, yes, T-Mo has beaten them in terms of an earlier rollout, but AT&T is going to have LTE layered on top of HSPA+; in the long term, their 4G speeds are going to be just fine.
