Nokia Statement Backs Apple's iPhone Defense
Straight talk about the iPhone 4's Antenna
Since most of the stuff I'm reading is said by individuals who have never owned/touched an iPhone 4, and I'm one of the few iPhone 4 users on this site able to reproduce the attenuation, I'm going to clear up some of the BS.
1) Since iOS4.0.1 , you pretty much won't see a drop from 5 bars to nothing. Anyone claiming that this is happening when they 'hold theirs' likely doesn't own an iPhone 4.
2) Providing you're not interfering with the antenna- in weak coverage areas there is a significant improvement in data performance, and voice quality. Even where I used to be able to slow my data with a crawl on my iPhone 3G, the iPhone 4 is unfazed. By contrast, my Nexus One will switch to EDGE sporadically in the same situation (though...

I do beleive that one needs to carry the phone properly for one to get adequate signal, and I know that the only way for the phone to be carried properly would be for it be carried by a different "carrier".

No way I'm getting an iPhone now
I was actually in the market for a new phone. I was getting tired of my old Crackberry and I was highly contemplating on purchasing the iPhone 4. But after hearing about all the issues with it on top of AT&T's newly changed data plans, I'm going with the Evo 4g now indefinitely. Those were my two choices and I was torn between the tool but this pretty much sealed the deal. A friend of mine who lives nearby has Clear and he says it's great. Sprint coverage is good over here too.

Design Flaw?
I think it is simply as excuse for a design flaw. This is hearsay and unverified as far as I know, but I have been told the iPhone4 internal antenna runs around the entire perimeter of the phone, except for a small empty spot about a ½ inch. This design works fine until you happen to place your finger on that empty spot, you finger now complete a full "circuit" and the signal degrades or drops altogether. I am just waiting for the fun to begin when Apple starts pointing the finger at AT&T’s network.

This is why every respectable cellphone maker on the planet earth puts the antenna either INSIDE the device completely- or sticking out of the top in such a ridiculous manner that no one would ever consider holding the device by the antenna.
Not sure what part of this was so hard for the head engineer at Apple to understand...
