Honestly, this operating system will have it's run, people will flock to it as the greatest thing since, well, blackberry. But it is already starting to fall apart.

Google has completely lost control of it's operating system. I guess that was the point of it from the beginning, but it almost seems like it is going to turn into another passing fad.

I honestly predict that Windows Phone 7-Series and iPhone are going to be damn near even with thier market control come 2 years from now. Apple will continue to grow and Microsoft will completely take off.

The reason I believe this?

because the two companies are quickly starting to understand that people run to quality over "choice" at nearly any expense.

Good luck with Android 2...

It's too bad this has nothing to do with reality... Android's market share is growing exponentially.

And if they can figure out an easier way to help developers with cross version app development, their fragmentation will be a benefit. All 2.1 gives is cosmetic updates... are you saying that "acting like an iphone" just requires a pretty UI?

2.0 was the major Function update, 2.1 is the cosmetic one.

There is nothing wrong if a company develops a UI overlay for 2.0 and it stays 2.0 until 3.0 comes out (even if Google releases 2.1, 2.5, 2.6, etc). Heck, with SenseUI, it took until 2.1 until it was clear WHY would would want a newer version of android over 1.5+sense.

Android is designed so companies can create their own user ...

You may think this is funny, I don't know, but I haven't played video games since the original Nintendo, early 90s, and I am so much looking forward to THIS! 3D gaming coming to Android 2.0+ smartphones (Droid)

1. Android's only sizable market share growth came from the Verizon Wireless Droid, a smartphone that STILL has the latest OS release "just around the corner." But before you call it a success, its numbers are comparable to the Blackberry Storm's- it ran out of steam as users realized the platform was crap.

2. There's nothing wrong with developing a UI overlay, until that UI overlay keeps your core OS stuck 4 versions back. That's not acceptable in 2010 when your competitors push a unanimous feature set.

3. Saying Android benefits from a shared app pool is a load of crap, as there's NOTHING... NADA.... ZIP in terms of efforts by Google to ease development across configurations. As Android diversifies it's only going to get worse. Even...

1. Actually their growth was because of the Droid and because of the myTouch, with continued growth expected.

2. Besides that, like I've said multiple times, if the overlay is decent there is no reason it must be constantly up to date. 2.1 is just now passing SenseEquipped 1.5. Any reviewer and anyone who's used the devices will tell you that.

3. I said that this was an area Google needed to work on. maybe if you would read posts instead of looking for copy/paste from apple insider you would see this.

1. Uh huh. Both with a massive, and I do mean massive marketing push. See where I'm getting at?

2. What if I, the end user, want to run something like Google Earth that is only 2.0+ compatible on my MyTouch? That's a completely valid concern from both a Developer's standpoint (do I subtract features to reach a broader audience?)

3. I don't read Apple Insider. I've said this about 100 times but apparently telling you my views come from my experience on each platform and as a developer are in one ear out the other.

1. You mean like the iphone's marketing push? Marketing sells phones.

2. Requires 2.0 for now. Remember Gesture search? Required 2.0.. now it is 1.6+ or Maps? formerly 2.0 only, now 1.6+. Again, if you read what I posted, I said that Google needed to make some tighter rules for the "with google" tag when it comes to development.

And your question is already answered by Apple with a resounding yes. They are intentionally crippling the OS and features their newest devices are capable of in order to make it backwards compatible to a device that's almost three years old. how much longer are they going to do this? are they going to continue crippling their devices for another year? two? or are they going to do the smart thi...

This tool above me actually has the balls to say something negative about how Android is marketed? How about Apple? Latest Iphone commercial states "Yeah, I need my Iphone for "EVERYTHING". After some idiot sitting on their couch munching on potato chips or bon bons hears that, they drive their brainwashed ass to an AT&T store and say "Well since the commercial says I need it for everything, I guess I must have it".

The reason why the majority of people buy iPhones is because of its pop-culture icon status. Half the people that buy them use them for a few useless apps and maybe to check a recipe on the web while they are at the grocery store.

People buy Apples because they are "cool", and because they can buy "fart" apps, and hampste...

Consumers are not going to care about most of what is debated in this forum. Interestingly an article about Sprint turned into a discussion of Droid vs. iPhone.

What my customers want is the ability to make the device do the things that they want it to do. Upgrading the OS is a perk and benefit. My customers couldn't give a fig about most of what was just posted. their questions are:
Will this work for me?
Is it worth the money?

For some who need the latest iconic device they will choose the iPhone and pay the huge amounts.
For some who are brainwashed by Verizon, they will buy the Droid and pay the same absurd monthly rates.
Everyone else will be more circumspect and look closely at T-Mobile and Sprint as well as the other 2.
At...
