I'd like to know what in the public interest, other than premiuim messaging, is in the public interest of allowing short codes

Spam-wise, it's okay, but if I choose to opt-in to a special interest group, that's my own personal business.
I would rather choose what I would like blocked on my own services rather than give up that to someone else. Next thing I know is that someone will tell me what religion I have to choose.

then it is up to you to opt- in to those. but the OP was about opting out of ALL special interests

I think there are two distinct issues here: first whether or not Verizon can block certain premium messaging services from their network. The premium people have at least a fighting chance on that issue on the whole freedom of speech thing. The second issue is whether or not customers can opt to block such messages. I'd have to side with the customers on this one, as it should be their right to decide whether or not they want to participate in premium services.
Overall the ability to block premium SMS is a great thing, and I hope other carriers will follow suit. It'll b...
