Premium messaging providers are NOT public interest groups....

I'd like to know what in the public interest, other than premiuim messaging, is in the public interest of allowing short codes

I think the article is talking about VZW blocking special interest groups from being able to sms their customers such as anti-abortion groups.

Spam-wise, it's okay, but if I choose to opt-in to a special interest group, that's my own personal business.

I would rather choose what I would like blocked on my own services rather than give up that to someone else. Next thing I know is that someone will tell me what religion I have to choose.

I see what you mean, but shouldn't there be freedom of speech in America?

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with forcing your opinions on other peoples' phones, causing them to have charges on their bill, that they had nothing to do with. I personally hate these companies, because everyone I deal with has had at least one experience with these companies, & though their children did cause it, they should still have the option to make sure they don't see those charges, which is what is great about the OPTION to block them, it's not even a guarantee.

Sure, but freedom of speech does NOT mandate that you have to listen to what the other person is saying, nor should you have to pay to hear it if you don't want to.

I think there are two distinct issues here: first whether or not Verizon can block certain premium messaging services from their network. The premium people have at least a fighting chance on that issue on the whole freedom of speech thing. The second issue is whether or not customers can opt to block such messages. I'd have to side with the customers on this one, as it should be their right to decide whether or not they want to participate in premium services.

Overall the ability to block premium SMS is a great thing, and I hope other carriers will follow suit. It'll b...

Freedom of speech only applies to government regulation of speech. It doesn't apply to this situation because the carriers are not government agencies.

Good point. I actually think it would be more restrictive of our freedom of speech if the government were to mandate that carriers had to allow premium SMS.

This is a market-driven issue, let the market decide.

Not every snort code is a premium service though. Sights that offer free ringtones and Screensavers like Myxer.com use short codes to send the ringtones and screensavers to you phone. Also some radio station that use text messaging use short codes and they are not premium services.

does freedom of speech overrule the right to privacy? or the right not to have your phone bill subject to unwarranted and unwanted charges.

I think premium txt services are a bunch of crooks, as most of them don't even have a number that people can call to find out what is going on. I seriously hope that the FCC is not stupid enough to not allow providers to block premium services, as that is seriously violating the customer's right to choosing their services. These companies know that they are the most bootleg service providers in the world, which is why they're so scared of these blocks, because all the "accidental" downloads of these services, which is where the majority of their profits come from, will be ended.

just remember doc, that under the current system, subscribers must call in to request that their numbers be blocked from short code messaging. when a line is newly activated, I don't know of one single carrier that blocks short codes from the start. they all leave it open
