I work in the wireless industry, and absolutely love it...thanks to the people who have been replying to my posts.
1. If the price was the only issue, Verizon would have bought out Alltel straight away. Now that a private investment firm(s) bought them, the firms have to turn a profit which means the price goes up.
2. There are lots of areas, like South Dakota, where Verizon and Alltel are the two primary rural carriers. If Verizon were to buy out Alltel, they would have to sell a significant number of towers to US Cellular or Sprint or someone to avoid monopoly issues.
If a single company could use a huge boost in rural coverage, it would be Sprint, but they're so bogged down in merging with Nextel and trying to turn a profit from that, that I doubt they're in any shape to buy a comp...
