"This pact will allow Sprint to catch up with Verizon's EV-DO footprint, which covers a wider area than Sprint's, without the cost of building out its network."

That makes a whole lot of sense.
Let the uneducated compare:

Sprint has the largest EV-DO network!!!

How many times are reportes going to make this mistake?

Verizon's EV-DO network reaches 148 million POP, in 181 markets.

Sprint's EV-DO reaches over 150 million POP, in 215 markets.

How can Verizon's EV-DO network be larger? Read the stats before you write an article.
Correction, Sprint's EV-DO is in 220 markets.

Rich or Eric??

Hey guys, can you shed some light on the last sentence in this report?? Where does Alltel roam with Cingular? Overseas with their rent a phone service? If so, Cingular doesn't have their own network overseas, we use other providers. Maybe I'm just naive, but I've worked for Cingular for quite a while, and I've never heard of Alltel ever roaming with us.
i think the gsm roaming is due to alltel acquiring western wireless which had both cdma and gsm service.

Alltel's GSM Roaming and EVDO Coverage Answers...

When Alltel bought out Western Wireless they got a GSM network that Western Wireless built just to make money from roaming revenue, because Western Wireless had their own customers on CDMA. Since Alltel now owns it Cingular and Alltel have a roaming agreement to let Cingular customers roam. Here is a map of the Alltel's current coverage for Axcess Mobile Link (1X) and Axcess Mobile Broadband (EVDO)...

Didn't know...

I was unaware Alltel had GSM service. Why would they need a service agreement with Cingular?

Qwest?

since Qwest is running off of sprints network, do they take advantage of the same roaming agreement?
