Cingular 3G To Launch November 1

I thought UMTS/HSDPA was supposed to blow EVDO away with its data speeds. Why are they only anticipating speeds that EDGE is capable of (or at least it seems that my EDGE phone can get 220-320 kbps)?????

EVDO gets real world speeds of 300 to 600 kbps. How is this supposed to be better?

Now I'm all disappointed, not only is my market not getting it, but it isn't going to be as fast as I thought. 😢

The goofiest thing about this discussion is that Verizon's early lead in 3G with EV-DO has not, in fact, netted them a ton of 3G customers. Verizon isn't quoting numbers, but reliable industry experts put VZ's 3G customer base (at least those with aircards and PDAs) at less than 1/2 million. If true, this means that about 1% of their very large base is using EV-DO. This of course discounts those with DV-DO phones, but is a much more reliable measure of who "cares" about a faster network than a discussion of how many Motorola E815s have been sold. I'm sure we can agree on that. (Someone with an EV-DO aircard or PDA purchased it FOR the speed of the network, whereas an E815 buyer isn't necessarily engaging in "3G", except by default with ...

Its great that Cingy is FINALLY starting to get their 3G ball rolling, but they're still so far behind.

Verizon 3G (EVDO):

- already in 84 major metro markets
- available to 140 million people
- avg speeds of 400-700 kbps, 2 Mbps burst

Cingy 3G (UMTS/WCDMA):

- in 15 major metro markets as of Nov. 1
- available to ? million people
- avg speeds of 220-320 kbps


Like I said, nice first step, but available to about 1/5 as many markets and at half the speed?

A) I've used a UMTS card in Seattle for some time and it is significantly faster than the claims currently. I definitely think this is a safe estimate so people aren't insanely pi$$ed when they fork over the money for it and it underperforms.

B) Cingular has EDGE almost completely nationwide. Much faster speed to fall back on if need be, plus I'm sure they have agreements with all the providers to assist in the UMTS rollout.

c) And this is the big one everybody's missing: You can talk and browse at the same time on UMTS. Might not be as important for laptop card users, but (although they're a high dollar segment) isn't the biggest segment. More people buy Treo's, BlackBerry's and the like than laptop cards. I started to read the posts on this forum and I really got frustrated. I just want to know how many of you actually use these EV-DO or any other high speed wireless internet??? The 3G cingular is rolling out is WCDMA based and is slower than HSDPA and EV-DO but HSPDA is only a SOFTWARE upgrade and anything else faster will be hardware,(I am not sure what else is faster right now, excluding WI-FI and such) I stay with Cingular data because I can use my laptop with it and can code it to do just about anything, Verizon I can not find any way to tether a laptop to a phone and use cheap data rates. If anyone has I would love to hear it, but as far as people posting someting just because they like to argue, that is different.

Verizon claims to cover 140 million people with its EV-DO offering, but that doesn't tell you how they measure those people. If, as is typical, they're stretching the definition as much as possible they're probably counting everyone who lives or works within their coverage area. You're probably being counted if you can use EV-DO at home or at work.

Cingular claims they're going to cover 15-20 cities by the end of the year, but that doesn't tell you how many people are covered. I used the 2000 U.S. Census figures for the covered cities to come up with roughly 50 million people who live in the covered metropolitan areas. So roughly 1/3 of Verizon's "coverage".

🙄 ..."Cingular expects throughput speeds of 220-320 Kbps on the network." What's the point?!? Both Verizon and Sprint have launched EV-DO networks that average 400-700kbps., peaking @ 2Mbps! It's like rolling out a VGA camera phone when everyone else is using 1.3megapixel and 2megapixel. Is there something I'm missing here??? If not, this is just pathetic!

I DON'T TRUST Verizon, they disable features, they're toooooooooo, too controlling of they're handsets, and here are some links for you Verizon loyalists. Phones cost TOO MUCH $$$ to be having features disabled.

Just out of curiousity, why won't any carrier launch anything new in the New York City. For example, when AT&T started rolling out GSM/GPRS, they first launched it in most of the other metro areas and when Verizon launched EVDO, they launched it in the west coast first, even though they are a New Jersey based company??????!!!!!!!

Remember the article right here @ Phone Scoop about Cingular and HBO having talks, well maybe not too much longer that will become a reality in new 3G/UMTS handsets, but aircards will probably be out before handsets.

I'm going to continue having faith in cingular, I believe they know what there doing. Atleast they better be seeing as how plans are more expensive now but i don't think people have really notice. The increase in money for the plans i believe is used towards building the 3g network. The phones may only be capapable of those low speeds for now but i'm sure its just because the network hasn't been extremly utilized yet on the towers. I'm sure once they get more the speeds will increase.

i have heard that BigOrange has 3G handset agreements with LG, Nokia, and Moto. Which phones will be available @ launch? maybe that moto that just popped up on FCC? hopefully a Nokia 6280 (im looking to leave my razr), but i really don't care for LG 👿

I was hoping St.Louis would be one of the 15 areas in the roll out of 3G. How long do you think for 3G to spread?
