Really no one gets it.

Sorry this is my rambling. Just about everyone has it wrong. I look at what people are paying for phones and service and it is ridiculous. I agree completely with this article except I will not sign a contract with the carriers unless there is some incentive for me, and a subsidized phone is not incentive. If you go to carphone warehouses website and look how it is done in the UK that is how it should be. Most plans are not more then $55 a month. Phones range in price depending on what you want. You can do contract or no contract. Some of the phones you get a free gift like a xbox 360. The best part you can get something like an iphone and chose six different carriers to use it on. People have no idea what phones actually cost and ...

Why write this now?

This has always been true. I wonder why junior high school match teachers didn't make word problems to help kids reason on phone costs. That is why if some people always get the upgrade and just sell it because otherwise they lose out.
Yes, it's nothing new.

But now that T-Mobile seems to be keeping Value plans around (it seemed iffy before) and making them a bigger part of the company's strategy, it seemed relevant. People have a real alternative now.

when 20 months is up, your bill goes down by $20/mo so long as you don't get a new phone, right?

T-Mobile prepaid lineup

Despite the fact their online and prepaid packaged phone select is limited you can go to a T-Mobile store and get any phone in stock activated as a prepaid phone.
