pushing iOS 6 to a 3GS?

Only one reason I can think of... crippling!

Even iOS 5 did not sufficiently cripple the 3GS to stop people form buying them new from AT&T on contract, or from throwing out their old one that they updated. Thus, I suspect that anyone who updates their 3GS to iOS 6 will, very shortly afterward, immediately be in the market for a new iPhone, and not a 3GS (no longer available)!
Numerous beta reports state otherwise. Many have said the phones ran smoother than iOS5 while on iOS6 beta.

Apple Maps?

So...we're supposed to feel good about the fact that they are abandoning the tried and true Google Maps for something that hasn't been tested yet? Ummm.....if I were an iPhone user I wouldn't be very happy to hear that... 🤨
Google Maps has been tried and true on Android, which they clearly favored over iOS for obvious reasons. At least now Apple can improve the Maps app independently from Google.

If iPhones existed in their own little universe, seperate from all other phones,

these features may be impressive.

As it stands alot of these features were already offered by other phones for quite some time, and most if not all are already available on previous iPhones through third party apps.
True, they also announced some pretty basic new features with fancy marketing names. Like, they kept referring to "Ultra-Fast Wireless" in lieu of "LTE 4G".

Still, for people that like iOS, it looks to be a pretty good little device.

If I remember correctly when they showed us iOS 6 in June the said it would be compatible with the iPhone 3GS and up and the iPod 4th generation and up.
