Texas Instruments today announced the WiLink 8.0 family of radio chips. Each variant offers up to five separate radios, including Wi-Fi, GNSS, NFC, Bluetooth, and FM transmit/receive. These single chip solutions use 45-nanometer manufacturing processes that reduces costs by 60%, size by 45%, and power consumption by 30%. A key feature of the WiLink 8.0 family of radios is that the NFC chip can talk directly to the phone's SIM card without waking the application processor. This translates to power savings when used for making mobile payments. The WiLink 8.0 line is already sampling and will ship in products during the second half of the year.
