Samsung today officially announced the world's first camera phone with 5-megapixel resolution. The SCH-S250, available later this month exclusively in Korea, also includes the first QVGA display in a mobile phone that supports 16.7 million colors. A text-to-speech function is also included, allowing the phone to "speak" to-do lists and incoming text messages. The 5-megapixel camera, designed in cooperation with Asahi Pentax, features a high-quality CCD sensor, 1/1000-second shutter speed, and QVGA video recording. The unique "stretch" design protects the display and camera lens when not in use. 92 MB of built-in memory can store up to 100 minutes of high-quality video, and an RS-MMC memory card slot provides additional storage (32 MB card included). An MP3 player and TV output round out the features.

Quality of Photos?

Does anyone know what the quality of the pictures taken from this camera phone is? Yeah, it's 5 MP but what does it look like? Does anyone have links to pictures taken from this or similar camera phones?
the 3.2 MP pics from my digital camera are print quality so what does that tell ya? You can expect that if it's a 5 mp resolution that you'll be able to print them and not tell the difference between that and a kodak moment. 😁

Uploading a pic will take years!

I've tried Sprint's megapixel phones, and the difference in upload time is significant (when compared to a 640x480 pic). Uploading a file taken with this device would simply be impractical. Only on a EV-DO network would I only consider this phone.
Don't think it will take that long with this one. Considering the fact that its memory is going to upped to 5mpxls is great. I can't wait to see the reviews on this phone.
i dont think it will take as long as you think on Sprint's vision right now, but i do agree that i would want it EV-DO capable. I'm pretty sure that it will be EV-DO if it does come out for sprint.

but uploading isn't that necessary because of the...

Well, this does have an RS-MMC card slot, so you can always get photos off that way.

EV-DO is coming to Sprint within a year, but EV-DO does NOT increase upload speed at all compared to 1xRTT, so it won't help you on uploading megapi...

w?bic!

Every time I hear about a new camphone I also hear the inevitable grumping about why camphones are stupid and a waste of time. Funny then how they outsell everything else. I have two and all I can say is why? BECAUSE I CAN! It's just a fun thing to have, and as quality improves I for one will be purchasing it. I just hope it finds its way into Palm and Pocket PC phones too.
Actually, I've already seen a variety of PDA-only devices with builtin canera's

"South Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom, said it would introduce 10-megapixel camera phones produced by Samsung by the end of this year."

-now, that's insane. 😛
I can't even find a 10-megapixel camera in stores!

But why make it look like a camera?

I like the fact that mobile phone manufactures are making higher megapixel camera phones, because most of the vga cameras in current phones are not very good at all. Even some of the newer 1.3 megapixel cameras aren't that great from what I've heard. Eventually they will have great resloution I'm sure, and maybe this phone is a step in that direction. But why are they making them look like an actual camera on one side? I like a mobile phone to look like a phone, not a camera, even though it happens to have one built in. I guess I just like it to be somewhat stealthy. This is my opinion. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Isn't this a little out of hand?

Don't you think they are getting a little out of hand with camera phones? 5-megapixels! Soon camera phones will be too big and exspensive to be reasonable for people to buy.
This type of thing is definitely a niche product until they can get the size down. Trust me - manufacturers are certainly not oblivious to size and cost concerns.

Samsung is just releasing this phone in Korea, and just sort of to prove they can and...
