Pantech Licences Patents from Intellectual Ventures
Intellectual Ventures recently announced that handset maker Pantech has agreed to license a selection of its patent portfolio. In addition to access to Intellectual Ventures' patent portfolio, Pantech can also participate in Intellectual Ventures' IP-for-Defense program, which helps protect companies from patent-based litigation. Pantech didn't disclose what patents it licensed, and terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Qualcomm this week launched the "Snapdragon 865 and 765 Modular Platforms", which are pre-engineered and pre-certified circuit boards that include most of the critical components for a high-end 5G phone (or equivalent cellular device.) As phones have become more sophisticated and refined, the costs of developing a competitive high-end phone have become prohibitive for all but the largest companies. This new program from Qualcomm aims to level that playing field for smaller companies.

Utah has launched a pilot program for mobile driver's licenses (mDL) based on the international mDL standard. The pilot will expand to 10,000 participants this year, including the broader public starting June 1.

Residents of Arizona and Georgia will soon be able to add a secure digital version of their driver's license or state ID to the Wallet app on their iPhone and/or Apple Watch. Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah have also announced plans to support Apple's implementation.

Qualcomm and Apple have reached an agreement to end all ongoing litigation over patents, including that extending to Apple's contact manufacturers. The companies have reached a six-year intellectual property agreement, with an option to extend for two years.
