Pantech Licences Patents from Intellectual Ventures
Intellectual Ventures recently announced that handset maker Pantech has agreed to license a selection of its patent portfolio. In addition to access to Intellectual Ventures' patent portfolio, Pantech can also participate in Intellectual Ventures' IP-for-Defense program, which helps protect companies from patent-based litigation. Pantech didn't disclose what patents it licensed, and terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Senators have overturned an agreement added to the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, that would have made it more difficult for President Trump to remove the ban instituted against ZTE. Earlier this year, the Commerce Department said ZTE lied about a previous settlement and banned the company from using American parts or software in its phonres for a period of seven years.

Nokia and Apple have this week filed patent-related lawsuits against one another in various jurisdictions. Nokia's claims, filed in Germany and the U.S., say that Apple is using Nokia's patented technology without permission.

Google today announced PAX, a patent-licensing initiative for Android that the company hopes will help resolve and/or prevent patent-related threats. Companies that join PAX give each other royalty-free patent licenses that cover Android and Google applications on compatible devices.

Facebook today said it has signed a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group that will give users of the social network new access to music and video content owned by Universal. Specifically, people "will be able to upload videos that contain licensed music and personalize their music experiences on Facebook, Instagram and Oculus, while sharing videos with friends and family."
