Samsung today unveiled a new camera sensor designed specifically for slim devices. The S5K8AA is a 1.2-megapixel, 1/8.2-inch CMOS image sensor system-on-chip (SoC) that can be used in camera modules shorter than 3mm. The S5K8AA supports video capture at 30 frames per second at 720p HD resolution and 60 frames per second at VGA resolution. The S5K8AA also includes 1.4 micrometer backside illumination pixel technology for low-light performance. This new camera sensor would be ideal in the user-facing position on smartphones that include video chatting applications. The chip is already sampling to select customers. Samsung didn't say when it would reach mass production.
