Nokia today announced plans to further reduce its headcount by approximately 3,500 positions. About 2,200 people will lose their jobs when Nokia shutters a plant in Romania later this year. Another 1,300 will be sliced from Nokia's Navteq unit, with cuts being made at a number of different locations, including at Navteq offices in Boston and Chicago. "We are seeing solid progress against our strategy, and with these planned changes we will emerge as a more dynamic, nimble and efficient challenger," said Stephen Elop, Nokia President and CEO in a statement. "We must take painful, yet necessary, steps to align our workforce and operations with our path forward." Nokia has already trimmed its workforce by thousands as it realigns its business with Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 platform at its core.
