LiMo and The Linux Foundation today announced that they are merging efforts and will develop a new open-source, standards-based mobile operating system using Linux with support from Intel and Samsung. The new brand of Linux, called Tizen, banks heavily on the addition of HTML5 support and will work on a number of devices, including phones, tablets, netbooks, in-vehicle systems, and TVs. Intel and Samsung will head development efforts of Tizen and bring it to market during the first quarter of 2012 as an alternative to platforms such as Android.
