Qualcomm Overhauls SnapDragon Branding

Qualcomm today announced a series of new naming conventions for its SnapDragon family of mobile processors. Qualcomm hopes the new naming system leads to less confusion and makes it clearer which chips are intended for which class of devices. The new names are broken down into four categories: S1, S2, S3, and S4. Devices with S1 class ships are mass market smartphones with processors under 1GHz, normal displays, and stereo sound. The S2 class chips are intended for high-performance smartphones and tablets running 1GHz to 1.4GHz processors that support HD video capture and playback. The S3 chips are mean for advanced gaming, multitasking and other high-end mobile devices with processors up to 1.5GHz that support HDMI out, 5.1 surround sound, and 3D video/image capture. Last, the S4 chips are being reserved for next-generation devices with processors ranging from 1.6GHz to 2.5GHz. Qualcomm doesn't expect any S4-level devices to reach the market until the first half of 2012.
