Verizon Wireless today confirmed that it will cease offering unlimited data plans starting next month. "We will move to a more usage based model in July," said Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney in an email sent to AllThingsD. "We’ll share more later." Verizon has mentioned several times this year already that it intends to move away from unlimited plans in favor of tiered plans. Before today, it had not said when the change will occur.

Any validity to no one will really be "grandfathered" in on any current unlimited plans?

In reading a related article posted on Android Central yesterday, the wording was very specific to mention something to the effect of customers who now have unlimited data plans would be grandfathered in for the duration of their current contracts once the tiered plans go into effect in July. I'm thinking that the mention of "current" contract is key in that as soon as you go to upgrade to a new phone thus requiring you re-up for another 2-year contract, you will then be required to select one of the tiered data plans. Usually when people are approaching their NE2 date (for those who still have them)the focus is really on getting that new phone that you've been dying to get and not really so much on contract/plan details, so I'm wondering ...

I was in a store today and the rep told me that as long as you don't change the plan yourself there's nothing to worry about, including upgrades.

I sent customer service an email about this, telling them exactly how unhappy I am about this. They responded in a pretty detailed email, and one of the comments was:

"Keep in mind that the changes that are coming in the near future about Tier dat...

Yes, we will be "grandfathered" as long as you don't change data plans. If you decide to upgrade to a 4G phone that may be considered as a data plan upgrade.

I sent an email and actually discussed on the phone with Verizon. He basically said to...

Well I'm locked in with an unlimited 4G plan...

I sure am glad I took the plunge and got me the 4G Droid Charge when I did, one month ago today 😁

More and more consumers are probably going to consider Sprint as a choice. Especially with the beast of a smartphone the EVO 3D coming out in 3 days.
I really hope we stay unlimited. My wife has the charge and I have the thunderbolt. We are both happy the way it is now.

idk why pppl would switch to sprint the network is somewhat capable of handling video stream speeds but as quality gets better and speeds have to be fast its just SOL soon sprint will be following their WiMAX Clear cohorts and closing their doors

Well it looks like my family will be leaving after 10 years

Unless they grandfather us in that leaves me no option but to go somewhere else. Verizon is already the most expensive company out there. I can't even fathom paying more than we do now for limited data.
They are a bunch of crooks. They just want to punish us for using these phones the way they were meant to be used.

Raping their customers and charging them for lube

Good ol Big Red. No surprise and $5 more than AT&T? Are you effing serious?? For a measly 2GB
What I can't get over is there are so, so many on Phone Scoop who think 2GB/mo is plenty. Those people obviously don't USE their smartphones.

Tiers

*tear tear*

Does anyone know the structure for the tiers? I feel like I'm over paying when my Droid Inc only uses about 750MB a month. It's totally not worth $30 IMO.
Shh. The other posters might jump on you for proving Verizon's point.
My guess is they will be released much closer to the actual date. 98% of their base will be happy with the new plans and 2% may be forced to pay more AT EARLIEST when their agreement moves to month to month.

Why so Suprised

ti mean seriously they announced it how many times... not to mention they aren't well known for being the most cost effective in their "plan" depts besides if they dont start setting a limit now the same thing will happen to them that happened to AT&T the network will be overloaded and then you'll be ushering in the "Dropped Calls" the one thing verizon can brag about at the moment lol (no offense just ironic) now obviously most people are saying they are leaving if they dont get grandfatehered well if history repeats itself (AT&T) you will be grandfathered unless you upgrade your phone from a snot nose kid at Walmart who just presses shiny buttons for minimum wage but what you should all really be worried about is what your gonna do when yo...
