Sprint today posted first 2011 quarterly results. Looking at the number of subscribers to its iDEN services (both iDEN and CDMA/iDEN), it appears as though the combined number of Sprint's various iDEN users has plummeted by 10% in a single fiscal quarter. At the end of the first quarter of 2011, Sprint reported having 5,617,000 post-paid (Nextel) iDEN subscribers, down 424,000 from the fourth quarter of 2010's 6,044,000 subscribers. On the pre-paid side (Boost), Sprint reported 3,200,000 customers at the end of the first quarter of 2011, down 560,000 from the fourth quarter of 2010's 3,740,000 subscribers. In sum, iDEN subscribers dropped from 9,784,000 (post-paid plus pre-paid) last quarter to 8,817,000 in its most recent quarter. The loss of 984,000 iDEN customers constitutes a drop of 9.9% during the first quarter of 2011. Sprint has announced plans to eventually shutter its iDEN network and move its CDMA voice services to the 800MHz spectrum currently used for iDEN.

Something some may no know

For Service and Repair, some people are actually able to, when they get their devices repaired for a qualifying issue where the device is defective, switch from a Nextel handset to an equivalent reconditioned Sprint CDMA based device, if a plan switch is necessary it does not extend the contract, etc.

These customers aren't fleeing the Nextel network, they're flocking to a more reliable network that has more to offer at what is still a very very good price.

With Sprint also rolling out another form of PTT (please, f***ing pick one and stay this time... I believe this will stick considering it is part of the multi-million Network Vision) this will enable these customers to immediately switch to one of these new devices with no change to...

I meant may "not" know. Lack of edit sucks.
Truthfully, I don't know how much of a market for Push to Talk exists anymore....most handsets don't support it, most customers don't know what it is, and these days most people seem to think that those kinds of simple conversations that they used to ...

How many have they tried? They had ReadyLink back before they bought Nextel. Then they've had QChat ...

Well...

Proof positive to what I said when they announced the shut down. you have a bout a million that jumped ship after they made than announcement, some to Sprint CDMA, some to other providers I imagine, and now theyre left with 8 MILLION DIE HARD iDEN SUBCRIBERS. They stand to lose more than a couple of those 8 million iDEN subs (I said 5, I was wrong) to whoever can provide that solution for them in Sprint's absence, namely SouthernLinc in some small capacity as they expand their network... SouthernLINC operating on an iDEN network will be the only one in the country thats still compatible with the Nextel Holdings in all of central and south Americas and Asia... Sprint is being very short sighted in just worrying about a nationwide solution to ...

Nii is looking at moving from iDen or a hybrid much like what Sprint did at first. The updated or upgraded version of qchat or whatever it is now is looking to have some type of off network ability and will work on 1xrtt and 800 cdma plus 3g and possi...

pathetic migration from IDEN to CDMA.

I disagree. Those subscribers are worthless. Iden doesn't make money. A. Sprint never should have bought Iden, but B. When they bought Iden they should have hurriedly cannibalized the network and turned it over to CDMA. My two cents.

This is why

The reason Sprint is coming up with other PTT solutions in the first place is because as phones become more data oriented iDen is not meant to be a high speed network in that sense. Data speeds are very slow on iDen. So a lot of people may be jumping ship just to get faster Internet speeds and to get the Smart Phones since there are very few smart phones on the network currently. Motorola has put out one decent smart phone on iDen but your back to the same problem with the data speeds lacking.
It's ironic that iDEN is slow on data (it was not designed for data - unfortunately) but it is still the undisputed performance king with sub-second PTT.

Conversely, CDMA 3G, GSM/HSPA+ and the new 4G's are lightning-fast on data but so terribly slo...

I wonder if they're making money yet

They are adding customers finally. But I remember I think it was last quater they reported that they added customers but they also reported a negative (in the red) revenue. Which someone pointed out, that is scary because that means they are attracting people with their low prices but the prices are so low and don't make money. So either they are going to have to higher the prices, or cut administrative cost or something else is going to have to cut to reduce the spending.
They have to attract and keep more customers long-term to be profitable. To think they're losing money on the service they sell is insanity. They have an overhead and debt problem that must be offset by subscribers.
nope.. see "Sprint has reported losses in every quarter for almost four years. The period ended March 31 was no different, with a net loss of $439 million, or 15 cents a share. "

Look at the Numbers

Without the loss of the iden customers, Sprint would have added 1.6 million subscribers in what is normally a slow quarter. These guys are finally starting to get back on track. It's too bad they had that Nextel merger.

By the same logic, without the $352 million in losses, Sprint made a profit....

Look.....it doesn't work that way....yo...

this is what happens when you have an awful company handling a great asset.

If I were a smoker...I'd ask for a hit of whatever it is you're smoking. However, I'm not and all I can say is you are out of your mind. Respectfully of course.
