Isis today named the first market it plans to deploy its mobile phone-based payment system. Isis is targeting to start the first pilot of its mobile commerce program in Salt Lake City in early- to mid-2012. In addition to Salt Lake City, Isis has also forged an agreement with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) to make the entire UTA transit system Isis-enabled, Mobile phone users in the Salt Lake City region will eventually be able to make mobile payments via near-field communication equipped devices at retailers throughout the area — including the UTA. Isis, which is a joint venture between AT&T, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, says that the mobile payment system will be open to all merchants, banks, payment networks and mobile carriers. Isis did not name exactly which banks, carriers, and devices will be powering the first pilot in Salt Lake City. Earlier today, Sprint announced that it plans to launch its own NFC-based mobile payment system later this year.
