Qualcomm to Buy Wi-Fi Chip Maker
Qualcomm has agreed to buy Atheros for $3.2 billion. The companies already cooperate to bundle chips to sell to phone manufacturers.

Qualcomm this week launched the "Snapdragon 865 and 765 Modular Platforms", which are pre-engineered and pre-certified circuit boards that include most of the critical components for a high-end 5G phone (or equivalent cellular device.) As phones have become more sophisticated and refined, the costs of developing a competitive high-end phone have become prohibitive for all but the largest companies. This new program from Qualcomm aims to level that playing field for smaller companies.

Qualcomm today introduced a suite of new modem and radio chips to power the next generation of higher-end 5G phones and devices. The company's new flagship 5G modem chip is the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System , which is the first in the world to support data rates of up to 10 Gbps.

Verizon and AT&T this morning refused a request by federal transportation officials to delay this week's planned launch of 5G service in the critical new C Band. [Update: By evening, the two companies agreed to a two-week delay.] The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) insists that the service could potentially interfere with radio altimeters that planes use to measure distance to the ground in poor weather.
