Skype today announced a new version of its iOS application that will allow users of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the 4th generation iPod Touch to conduct free, live, two-way video calls to other Skype users (both mobile and desktop). The updated application, which is free and available starting December 30, also works with the iPad and 3rd generation iPod Touch. Both these devices can receive, but not transmit, live video calls from iPhones or desktop Skype users. The new Skype application for iOS devices also allows for screen sharing from desktop machines to the iPhone, iPad or iPod. Skype says the new software will work over 3G networks (including AT&T's) as well as Wi-Fi. Performance averages 12 frames per second for sending video from the iPhone and about 15 frames per second receiving on both 3G and Wi-Fi. Skype VP Neil Stevens told Phone Scoop that users might notice some blockiness over 3G connections, but Wi-Fi will offer more stable performance. The new Skype application is available worldwide.

iPhone 3GS?
Or does it just receive the picture while sending the other party voice only? If so that's a pretty lame 'video call'.
