U.S. Proposes Adding Femto Cells to All Federal Buildings

Two senators have proposed legislation that would require all 9,000 publicly-accessible federal buildings across the country be outfitted with both a femto cell base station and a small number of Wi-Fi hotspots in order to boost coverage. Senators Olympia J. Snowe (Maine) and Mark R. Warner (VA) believe the legislation, called the Federal Wi-Net Bill, would help to improve indoor performance of wireless networks (the senators specifically site the probability of a reduced number of dropped calls), and help free up capacity on the local macro cellular networks. The senators think the end result will be more reliable and faster service for everyone. The General Services Administration would be responsible for completing the installations, and the bill asks for $15 million in funding to cover project costs.
